MMDA Chairman Romando Artes convened a dialogue with representatives from major public transport organizations to discuss the implementation timeline and operational framework for the unified fare collection system in Metro Manila. The meeting, held at the MMDA headquarters in Makati, was attended by leaders from PISTON, LTFRB-accredited transport cooperatives, and operators of the EDSA Bus Carousel.
During the dialogue, Chairman Artes presented the proposed phased rollout of the contactless fare payment system, which will integrate jeepneys, buses, UV Express, and the EDSA Bus Carousel under a single electronic payment platform. Transport groups raised concerns about the cost of onboard payment terminals and the transition period for drivers and operators. The MMDA committed to providing subsidized terminal units and a six-month grace period before full enforcement.
Both parties agreed to establish a joint technical working group that will meet bi-weekly to address implementation challenges and ensure the smooth transition to the new fare system. The unified fare collection system is a key component of the government's public transport modernization program and is expected to improve commuter convenience, reduce fare disputes, and provide accurate ridership data for future transport planning.
